More than one year into Israel’s war on Gaza, the humanitarian situation is catastrophic. Before October 2023, 80% of Gaza’s population already relied on some form of humanitarian assistance and people lived under severe restrictions. Since the start of the war, more than two million Palestinians have been trapped inside Gaza, subject to terrifying bombardments, hunger, multiple forced displacements, and constant fear.

Nowhere in Gaza is safe.

The government must end the secrecy around military exports, and provide transparency of the due diligence process for arms sales.

Australia must play its part in upholding international law, doing everything it can to end the siege in Gaza and call for a path to real and lasting peace.

Dear Prime Minister Albanese and Minister Wong,

I am gravely concerned for the Palestinian people, as Israel continues indiscriminately bombing Gaza and maintains the violent occupation, with little aid able to be delivered to people in desperate need.

What will you do to end the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, to stop the bloodshed and unimaginable horrors that 2.3 million Palestinians have already endured?

I’d like to see your government actively amplifying global calls for a ceasefire while also:

* Publicly supporting the ICJ’s decision, complying with Australia’s legal responsibility under the Genocide Convention to use all possible tools to leverage better protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law, 
 
* Ending the secrecy on military exports and provide transparency of the processes of arms sales, 
 
* Urgently pushing for unfettered humanitarian aid to enter Gaza immediately.

In December, I welcomed your vote at the UN General Assembly calling for a ceasefire. And now, also on the international stage, I’d like to see Australia exercise its commitment to upholding the rules-based order and use diplomatic measures to strongly urge the Israeli government to immediately comply with the ICJ’s ruling to not commit any of the acts proscribed under the convention.

Further, as our leaders, I implore you to do everything in your power to end the war, so recovery and reconstruction can begin for the people of Gaza.
